About 40 Bettendorf residents who attended an open house Tuesdayto peruse suggested plans for the city’s new park were remindedthat none of the three concepts presented were final plans.

“These are very much dart boards,” said Mike Bell of RDGPlanning & Design, the company hired by the city to developplans for the 100-acre Forest Grove Park. “What we’re asking you todo is throw stuff at them.”

Tuesday’s open house was an opportunity for the public toscrutinize and offer input about three concepts for the developmentof the park, said Steve Grimes, the city’s parks and recreationdirector.

The “Active” concept includes three baseball fields, ahandicapped-accessible baseball field called a “Miracle Field,” andan indoor and outdoor aquatic center.

The “Natural” concept is focused more on open greenspace, withrestored prairie and wetland areas and an amphitheater.

The “Agrarian” concept is a blend of the other two, with aMiracle Field, basketball courts and a playground, but alsofeaturing amphitheater, educational areas and communitygardens.

Each of the plans included trails, shelters and a lodge.

Grimes said RDG would take the input gathered Tuesday and createa plan that would likely be a combination of the three concepts.The public will get another chance to view the plans and offerinput before a final plan is put together and submitted for theapproval of the park board and city council, likely later thisspring.

Development of the park is at least a year or two away, and willbe done in phases, Grimes said.

Jenni Weber, who lives near the ground south of Interstate 80and east of Middle Road where the park will be developed, said shefavored the less-intensive development plans for the park.

“It would be nice to keep it as natural as possible,” shesaid.

Pam Kaufman agreed, saying it would be nice if the park were aplace where people could enjoy nature.

“People in our culture are too removed from nature,” shesaid.

Brandon Timper and Chris Sprague, local disc golf players, saidthey thought the park would be an ideal location for a disc golfcourse, which would take advantage of the natural terrain.

Timper said while he thought the Miracle Field should beincluded because it meets a need that is not being met in thecommunity, he didn’t see the need for more baseball diamonds.

“Almost every park in Bettendorf has a diamond,” he said.

Matt George, who also lives near the location of the new park,said he had concerns about whether Forest Grove Road will beimproved before the park is developed and brings more traffic tothe area.

As the father of two small children, George said he favored adevelopment plan that would mix active and passive recreationopportunities.

While he has concerns that signage for the park along I-80 maydraw unwanted visitors off the interstate and into the residentialneighborhood, George said he thinks the park will have a positiveimpact on the neighborhood and the city.

“I see more upside than downside,” he said.

Modern means “in the present time,” at least with a people. So, you will find people who believe that modern furniture has to become brand new. Incidents where think that it has to be styled in a sleek, futuristic kind of way to reflect the ever-changing times. With that definition, any furniture that looks a little in front of it is time might be considered modern. However, the truth is that the word “modern furniture” actually refers more to some school of design.

That school of design is known as “modernism”. The modernism movement began with designers who desired to emphasize function over form. However, these days, this style is not just about function. It’s a type of functional modern art.

Pieces of furniture which are completed in the modernism style tend to use a variety of materials. Metal and plastic are popular options simply because they sleek, clean lines and can be molded to any shape. However, this style of furniture pieces can also contain plywood and many other material.

Contemporary Furniture:

Contemporary furniture can be defined in many different ways. For example, it may mean furniture done in today’s style, whenever today happens to be. For instance, someone residing in 1950 who owned furniture made in the 1950s could refer to it as contemporary, but someone living today the master of furniture created in our time could also refer to it as this way. That is why many people believe that modern furniture and contemporary furniture is the same thing.

Contemporary pieces can also be defined as an organization. For instance, an antiques expert who came across several furniture pieces from the 1920s could give them a call “1920s contemporary”. However, a person who came across several 1990s pieces in a yard sale could call them “1990s contemporary”, too. So, this style isn’t just furniture completed in one style or era. Nevertheless, many people think of contemporary furniture as completed in their very own time. So, by that definition, anything completed in the modernism style could also be considered contemporary with a people. In the end, current trends do lean towards both functionality and style.

When referring to modern furniture and contemporary furniture, the place that the merchandise originated is also important. For example, items made in present-day China is considered to be Chinese contemporary or modern Chinese furniture. The same thing could be true for Japan, the USA or any other geographic location.

Current pieces generally utilize glass, metal and chrome for shiny and clean features. Modern contemporary pieces will also be usually smooth and use sharp lines and angles. However, that will depend a great deal on whereby the planet the furnishings comes from. For example, European, American and Japanese contemporary furniture are quite distinctive and various in one another.

Q. Hi Deb. My boyfriend and I are in the process of updating our older home, with either selling or renting in mind. We always look forward to your section to help guide our decisions. Our questions pertain to the kitchen. As you can see form the pictures we are now in the process of painting the cabinets white. We have been thinking about silver hardware for the cupboards and drawers. The backsplash is new so we are hoping to work with it, but have no idea what colour to paint the walls. Also, what colour/kind of window treatment will work in this space?

We have two different types of flooring to consider on the main level at the moment. Our dining room has recently been done in laminate and our living room is maple. These are new and although one type of floor would be ideal, our budget requires us to work around what we have. Our kitchen leads to a hallway and then a bedroom, all of which require flooring. In order to minimize the differences between flooring on this level, we are thinking about a medium dark laminate for the kitchen, hall and bedroom area. Also there is an open awkward space next to the stove…not sure what to do with that either.

A. Hi Crystal. Thank you for the question. It looks like you are already in the process of painting the cabinets, which is certainly a great start towards a fresh new look in your kitchen. Since you have mentioned this house is potentially a rental or resale property, you likely don’t want to invest too much. There are some great ways to update a kitchen without getting into the expense of a full renovation.

A few things come to mind right away when I look at your space. The first priority would be to determine the flooring throughout the space. Since this is an update for resale or rental, I would recommend laminate flooring. I also agree you should try to minimize the number of flooring changes on the same level of the house. I wasn’t sure if it would be possible to match the laminate to the dining room floor, then you could carry this floor into the kitchen, hallway and bedroom. If it is not possible to match the flooring exactly, then I would suggest a mid-brown tone laminate for the kitchen, hallway and bedroom area. I think a laminate is the way to go for durability, affordability and ease of installation. I have suggested a laminate flooring in a chestnut brown colour which I think would be an excellent choice for the kitchen.

Once you have the new laminate floor in, and the kitchen cabinets all painted white, there are a few other simple updates you can do to get good bang for your buck. I think the current backsplash and counter top look great and you can work with those. I would paint the kitchen walls in a grey tone; ideally pick up a colour that is already in the backsplash. A light grey colour or a medium shade of charcoal would be great options.

For the window treatment I would suggest a textured bamboo roman shade. The one I am showing you comes in a colour called oak; this light colour would work well in the space and coordinates with the floor and wall colour.

The hardware on the kitchen cabinets could be a brushed or polished stainless steel colour. If you wanted something with a bit more drama, you could also consider a black knob which would also look great with the white cabinets and grey wall colour.

As for the space next to the stove, I would look to see if you can buy a stocked, inexpensive, lower cabinet in the right width that could fit in the space; or you could consider a cart or small island.

Again, this really depends on the width of the space. Hopefully you can find something pre-built to fit there to avoid having something custom built. Other updates could be to add a new faucet, something in a more contemporary style, like a gooseneck faucet, would add interest and look more current. I also noticed the ceiling fan looks a little large and they can look dated in small kitchens. I am recommending a smaller, simple white contour-shaped flush-mount light fixture. Something small and simple like this fixture would look more sleek and new.

Hopefully these ideas help you to continue with your stylish new kitchen upgrade, and you create a room that looks great and functions well for you, too.

Robin Bond Interiors can help with holiday “to do” list inside the home.  “We can install the client’s existing trees and decorations (all interior – we do not do exterior other than some nice decorations on the entry porch and a wreath),” clarifies Bond.  Interior designer will come up with a holiday color scheme or theme for the client and then start building on that so that all of the holiday décor works well together.  Shopping for all of the merchandise can be left to the decorating specialist or the client can shop with them to purchase everything.  “We also recommend letting us install the job, since there is a system for making a Christmas tree look great and for adding special touches to mantels or staircases.  It takes us on average 4 hours to decorate a 7.5 foot tree and to shop for one is typically no more than a couple of hours.  A tree is a great starting point.  Just like home decorating, I think less is more when it comes to Christmas Decorating.  Start out with a great tree and then add a few things each year,” says Bond.

BONITA SPRINGS — KVS Interior Design’s Tina Margrander, ASID, NCIDQ and Design Assistant Julie Oswald, ASID, NCIDQ are creating and executing interior designs for two model residences being built by McGarvey Custom Homes in Quail West.

One of the models, McGarvey’s Bardane villa in Quail West’s La Caille neighborhood, is nearing completion.

The Bardane’s two-story great room floor plan offers 3,788 square feet under air and includes an oval-shaped foyer, four bedrooms, a study, a staircase leading to the loft, three-and-a-half baths, a gourmet kitchen, a free-form pool, spa and landscaped pool deck and a covered outdoor living area.

The model includes an optional outdoor kitchen and fireplace as well as an optional wine cooler in the kitchen. The large master suite has a sitting area that opens to the outdoor living area and offers golf course and water views.

The classic-transitional design style features a color palette that includes light, creamy backgrounds with chocolate browns and aqua blues as well as gold and white contrasts.
